Sawara flourished based on water transport and was once even called "Edo Masari" (superior to Tokyo) in the Edo-period. The people incorporated various elements of Edo culture while also establishing their own unique culture. There are still many buildings and facilities which remind us of Sawara's former prosperity.

Important Preservation District for Groups of Traditional Building

In the town of Sawara, post towns have been formed around the waterways since 600 years ago, and it was a lively commercial city where many people and boats come and go.
